Product Description
King Aethelrod II was the son of King Eadgar and Aelfthryth born circa 968 AD. His reign was greatly disturbed by invasions of Danish fleets and armies which massive payments of money failed to curb. He lost his crown from 1013-1014 to King Sweyn of Denmark.
He was known as "The Unready" from UNREDE - without counsel. This Anglo-Saxon Penny coin was struck in silver at the Canterbury mint by the moneyer Leofstan and is a long cross type.
The mint at Canterbury was but one of nearly 90 in Anglo-Saxon England.
This coin has been cast in lead-free pewter and antique finished.
