Product Description

Alexander III was less than 8 years old when he succeeded his father Alexander II in 1249. He married Margaret, daughter of Henry III King of England and was succeeded in 1285 by his grand-daughter Margaret of Norway. Her death at the age of 7 led to the disputed succession which was arbitrated by Edward I King of England.

This penny was struck in silver with the Berwick mint mark, and is of the second coinage. Some 50 million coins were produced. The words inscribed on the face of this coin are ALEXANDER DEI GRA - meaning Alexander by the grace of God.

On the reverse is REX SCOTORUM meaning King of Scots.

This coin has been cast in lead-free pewter and antique finished.
