Product Description

Elizabeth I was born in 1533, the daughter of Henry VIII. She succeeded her half-sister Mary I in 1558, supplanting Mary's widower Philip II King of Spain who had been declared joint sovereign in 1553 until her death in 1603.

The Elizabethan Age was one of adventure and discovery with the crowning glory being Drake's defeat of the Spanish Armada. This sixpence was struck in silver with the Castle mint mark and is of the third issue. The words inscribed around this coin are ELIZABET DG ANG FRA ET HIB REGINA which translates as "Elizabeth by the Grace of God Queen of England France and Ireland". On the reverse is written POSVI DEV ADIVTOREM MEV meaning "I have made God my helper".

During Elizabeth's reign the provincial mints were at last closed down and all the English coinage came from the Tower of London.

This coin has been cast in lead-free pewter and antique finished.
