Product Description

The Civil War became an armed conflict between Royalist and Parliamentary forces arising from the constitutional, economic, and religious differences between Charles I and the Long Parliament.

It was at Newark in 1646 that Charles I was captured by the Scots under Alexander Leslie and handed over to Parliament after refusing to take the covenant. After an escape, Charles was recaptured, brought to trial ad executed in January 1649. This Half-Crown Siege coin was crudely struck from pieces of hammered silver plate during the several times the town of Newark was besieged.

The initials inscribed on this coin are CR, representing Carolus Rex meaning King Charles and XXX representing 30 pence.

This coin has been cast in lead-free pewter and antique finished. Click on Thumbnail for larger image
