The island of Sicily was settled by the Greeks in the eighth century BCE. Due to its the strategic location, Sicily under the Greeks became the commercial and cultural crossroads of the Mediterranean. Syracuse was the most important colony in Sicily. Founded by Corinthian colonists around 733 BCE, Syracuse allied itself with Sparta and Corinth.
By the third century BCE Syracuse was the largest and most prosperous city state in Magna Grecia. This lapel pin features a lead-free pewter reproduction of a Greek silver diadram struck in Syracuse between 490 to 465 BCE.
The pin shows the diadem head of Artemis-Arethesa in the archaic style with hair falling in formal tresses over the neck.
