Before his accession, Augustus recognized Tiberius' legitimacy as his successor on a coin. Continuing his adopted father, Tiberius acknowledged his lawful accession as emperor by issuing coins honoring Augustus and Tiberius' immediate family. From CE 4 to 14 Tiberius was clearly Augustus' successor. When adopted by Augustus, Tiberius received proconsul and tribunician powers.
Coin #1: In CE 10, Augustus issued a pre-accession coin, Tiberius Copper Sestertius, showing Tiberius' titles of 'power of the tribunes' (TR P); 'supreme commander of the army' (IMP); and 'consul' (COS). The original coin was struck in Lugdunum. From 13 BCE to Augustus' death in CE 14, Tiberius and Augustus jointly held titles of 'power of the tribunes' (TR P); 'supreme commander of the army' (IMP); and 'consul' (COS).
Coin #2: In CE 16, Tiberius' issued his earliest post-accession coin, Tiberius Silver Denarius. The inscription of 'Pontifex Maximus,' declares Tiberius as the leader of the Roman religion. This coin is commonly called the 'Tribute Penny' in the King James Bible translation of the New Testament story idin Matthew's Gospel 22: 17-21.
Coin #3: In CE 22, Tiberius issued a coin honoring his deified father. Tiberius Divus Augustus Sestertius. Struck in Rome.
Coin #4: In CE 22, Tiberius issued a coin honoring his mother, Livia Dupondius.
Coin #5: In 23 CE Tiberius' son, Drusus Jr, became sole heir to the imperial throne. Tiberius issued a coin honoring his son, Drusus Jr. Sestertius.
