Queen Victoria, born in 1819, succeeded her uncle King William IV, in 1837, her father Edward Duke of Kent, William's next brother, having died in 1820 when she was only 6 months old. She married her cousin, Prince Labert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who was given the title of Prince Consort in 1857 and died in 1861.

The Queen died in 1901 and was succeeded by her eldest son Edward VII. Her reign was the longest of any British sovereign. The words inscribed around this coin are VICTORIA D G BRITT REG F D which translates as "Victoria by the grace of God Queen of Britain and defender of the faith".

The sovereign coin was always minted in gold. This coin has been cast in lead-free pewter and plated in 22K Gold.
