Product Description
In 1886, the first $2 silver certificate with a portrait of United States Civil War Union General Winfield Scott Hancock on the left of the obverse was issued. Two-dollar Treasury or "Coin Notes" were issued for government purchases of silver bullion from the silver mining industry. The artists of the Merrick Mint have used an advanced technology over this modern uncirculated United States $2 bill, enhancing it with images from the 1886 Winfield Scott Hancock $2 Banknote, to create a collectible work of art.
There was a time and place in American history when American paper notes were almost like small works of art carried around by average Joes in their pockets. In 1890s and first decade of the 1900s, the United States sought to create paper currency designs that were worthy of attention and awe from everyday Americans. While most of these notes have been lost to history, with the few remaining specimens in the hands of avid collectors, the options are not lost for modern collectors. Private mints have taken advances in high-definition imaging to recreate some of the nation’s greatest note designs on modern Federal Reserve Notes.
